Lucca is a city of around 90,000 inhabitants built on the foundations of a Roman settlement. The central square, the Piazza dell'anfiteatro, is inside an ancient amphitheatre. It is surrounded in a semicircle by a whole series of medieval buildings. The main attraction of the old town is the massive city wall from the 12th/13th century. Four stone gates give access to the labyrinth of alleys inside. The numerous towers in the old town are striking, most of which were built by the Guinigi family in the 14th century.
